Re: Illumos - OpenSolaris
Henrisha,

Agreed. It is infintely easy to get caught in the firestorm and stay at a standstill in order to not make the wrong move in project implementations. The occasional reminder of the goal and maybe some reinforcement of the pain point in NOT doing so can do wonders.

Re: Resource consumption
Yeah, good question, @Toby. As I understand it, this product creates only a new copy of your database; then, a database server is given that copy and off you go, using it as you would any other database.

Re: Resource consumption
@John: Great insight into just how virtualization is pretty much changing the game everywhere. I wonder what the performance penalty will be in this case as DB access is typically a bottlenexk to begin with.

Re: Resource consumption
I don't quite understand what the difference is between, as you write, "mirror images" and duplicates, @Gigi. As I understand it, what Delphix makes possible is for developers to quickly create a working copy of the production database that they can use to test their apps against. This copy is constructed on the fly, at the moment it's needed. It can be used and then thrown away. And tomorrow, when another database copy is needed, that will be constructed on the fly, as well, reflecting all of the latest changes made to the production copy.

Re: Illumos - OpenSolaris
I agree. This extra push helps speed along the development of a project especially through the bottlenecks.

These checks also push people to be more productive. These people aren't lazy per se, but they might have a personality that requires the occasional push or shove to get them moving.

Resource consumption
"Software enables developers and others to provision and manage as many copies of a relational database as they need, all on a single server"

John, this means for all the access it's going to create only mirror images rather than duplicating it. The same copy is also saving in server and only final update is happening to the master file. I think the multiple copies can consume more memory and bandwidth for all individual access. How the resource consumption can be managed in a better way.

Innovator,

Anything that eliminates headaches for anyone in the development process is a good thing. I have personally found that most 'approval processes' are just checks on who's doing what.

So every little boost in productivity helps.

Communication

I think what Delphix has come forward with will be particularly helpful in developing software that encompasses information about lots of region, in other words one that has a nationwide scope. Plus, coordination would also improve among different teams working on the same project. I wonder though, if this technology allows members to identify which update to the original copy was made by which personnel, as that would allow team members to communicate a lot better among themselves and possibly combine their efforts toward a better working product.

Re: Illumos - OpenSolaris

John, Thanks for exposing this issue of application development and DB sprawl, since I don't work in this area directly - it was interesting to understand the process of making changes to a DB amongst developers and the potential head ache it is to keep up with the versions.

I am excited about companies like Delphix because they will aid in speeding up the development process - a win-win for everyone concerned.

Illumos - OpenSolaris
I forgot to mention, Delphix is another company using the OpenSolaris operating system, aka Illumos project, along with Joyent. Yes, there is a theme here.
