Re: DIY
Thank you, John. One more question - would we need an indutrial stength IT person toman=intian on an ongoing basis? Like to change the time on the phone to daylight savings time (our latest calamity!)?

Re: DIY
@CPAfern, I can't tell you this PBX in the cloud would work for anyone other than a bunch of programmers, but ... I can tell you that there are a bunch of soft PBXes around that are industrial-strength. One of the most popular is called Asterisk. Many companies have taken this open source project and turned it into a commercial product.

Re: DIY
John, this is great news. I do not think you are being too optimistic but I, being the eternal skeptic, worry about how to sell this to the CEO. I have a client right now who would fit into this perfectly, as he is getting slammed by vendos every step of the way for both phone and computer functions. How can I satisfy myself and ultimately the CEO, that this is legit, will work, for free, and not cause any interruption of service?

I wish I knew more about PaaS and code so I could make use of this technology myself.

The real message here is that PaaS makes it possible to quickly rig up new apps, and with open source code abundantly available, those with a technical bent can rig up some quite elegant and powerful apps for themselves - or, I imagine, for their clients, as well.

Re: Roll your own PBx

Thanks John for explaining PaaS, and I don't think you are being too enthusiastic about it at all.   As companies move more confidently into Cloud based services, I can't help but see the PaaS segment grow proportionally.   Ironically, the company I am with now is not currently using any feature of PaaS though that could change.

Re: Roll your own PBx
I cannot answer your questions specifically, but my educated guess is that yes, since it's Twilio and since it's on the Web and since it's all just IP, the answer is a resouding YES! My quick glance at the Twilio site makes me think they are about as flexible as possible, and they offer a drag-n-drop intgerface to help customers set up their own sequences of actions, etc. Pretty cool.

John, excellent insights and subject matter as ever :)

Do you want the truth or something beautiful?

I see this development as a huge boost to the small business trying to look like a big business, from the outside at least. Will all these services standardize to the point I can integrate them..? Not sure. Can I rout cloud PbX notifications to my Google voice account and send the SMS to my mail server or to my Google Docs account to be appended to a file for a client..? Lovely to hope so.
