Re: Communication Sources
That's the argument that I was making FOR email staying around for a long while. I was just insisting that since people spend much of their free time responding to work emails, this must all be kept on the company's systems. I'm not exactly sure how they would manage this all without the email structure.

Re: Communication Sources
Henrisha,

Just for business compliance purposes alone, I think it will never go away. Just think about the policies that will have to be re-written if email is removed from the equation. I'm not sure how you coud regulate the post-it on the desk if email is taken out of the equation.

Re: Disconnection
@Anand: That might have been true in the past but I believe today most people have access to reliable internet. Atleast, people here have the option to get DSL connections in almost all cities.

I think it depends more on the mindset of the people. People in the rural areas are not well versed with internet and computing technologies. Therefore, they prefer voice calls.

Re: Disconnection
@nasimson: I agree with you. People prefer to talk over the phone or use other means such as SMS because they need to sure that the message actually gets conveyed. Eventhough internet penetration is increasing day by day. Not many people here check their email regularly (apart from the professionals who need to do it as part of their job).

Since, mobile phone penetration is much greater than the internet penetration conventional consumers prefer SMS or voice calls over personal emails.

In the Sub-continent, personal email is almost non-existent in my opinion; people prefer to talk over the phone or use other outlets such as skype etc.

@nasimson, I think one of the major reasons why personal email is almost non-existent is because many people dont have access to reliable internet connection. Hence they prefer talking over phone rather than send an email.

Disconnection

In the Sub-continent, personal email is almost non-existent in my opinion; people prefer to talk over the phone or use other outlets such as skype etc. I believe it's because people nowadays hardly have the time to check their emails for personal use, quick on the go conversion keeps gathering momentum due to its swift and convenient nature. People find tedious to sit down and compose letters to their loved ones and such because there are other quicker alternatives. This is, in my opinion one of the downsides of the technology, it has connected us on a physical level but caused a disconnection on a personal level.

Re: Communication Sources
Pretty much because more and more, people's work lives leak into their personal.

@philtheswguy, I agree with you that  more and more, people's work lives leak into their personal but that doesn't mean companies will encourage the employees to use personal emails for official communication because companies are always worried about data security.

Re: Email as a Goldmine?
I don't think email will go away, I do hope spam decreases though.

@tinym, true email will not go away but it will definitely evolve over the time. Its pretty interesting to note that  the number of business emails sent every day is going to grow by 13 percent. I feel business users will stick to email because they perceive email as more secured means of communication.

Re : The Steady Decline of Personal Email
@John, thanks for the post. I think the future of email is social. I think we will either pull all of the new social capabilities into the current email environment or it might be viceversa.  This will give the end users flexibility of choosing either direct or indirect way of communication.
