Re: Video Reveals Secrets of YouTube's IT Prowes
Not me; most of my favorite YouTube videos are those with smaller, sub-1Million viewerships. But that's me, Mr. Long Tail. I think you may be right, that there are many people who just follow the leader and go with the pack and watch whatever looks like it's popular, regardless of its actual value.

Re: Video Reveals Secrets of YouTube's IT Prowes
Youtube artificially increasing its views counts is really disappointing from the uploader's perspective, but another angle worth exploring in my opinion would be  video sharing site's promoting a certain opinion or marketing drive by increasing the views count arbitrarily to generate more hype, as all of us are more likely to watch a particular video if it has a large view count.

Re: Video Reveals Secrets of YouTube's IT Prowes

Thanks John for the link - A fascinating peek inside YouTube, especially the fact that page counts cannot be relied upon.  I share Toby's concern about the lack of reliability in this area.  Disturbing for sure but as I let this sink in - not so surprising.

I hope that Youtubes view numbers are valid. They give you the option of viewing the video statistics including dates and locations.

I agree with Seth. What's the point of having view numbers if Youtube is just faking them or padding them up to entice more people to watch? Still, it was an interesting video to watch and learn a few things from.

Re: Faking It
SaneIt, it seems similar to the way number the room in Hotel/Resorts. They start the ground floor by prefixing 0 (01, 02...), first floor by professing 1 (100,101 ...), second floor by prefixing 2 (200,201...). In you tube case, from user point of view it's not possible to identify how many people's are so far visited the site or played the video. Just believes the counts and more over why we have to worry about it.

Re: Faking It
I don't think there are any laws prohibiting it. It may violate the Terms of Service but the worst that could happen in that case is getting booted from the site. I don't think there are legal repercussions.... as of yet.

Re: Faking It
The video stated they use over a million lines of python, :) I wonder how they keep control of that.

I don't know if it was a good idea for Youtube to release their secrets.  I hope that Youtubes view numbers are valid.  They give you the option of viewing the video statistics including dates and locations.

I like how the video pointed out that the best choices for scalability are to "choose the simplist solutions with the loosest guarantees that are pratical."  That if the conditions are too definded, that increases complexity and problems.  I think that actually is good advice for life all around.

Re: Faking It
@Toby, I don't think that there is a law.  Back in the early 90's when putting page counters on everything was popular you never started a counter at zero or even in double digits.  I'm sure it has a name but there is a psychological effect that people will like things that they believe are popular so if you can "look" popular chances are you'll end up being popular. Youtube seems to have tapped into that and is using it effectively.

Re: Faking It
Toby, am not sure about Google and YouTube, whether they are manipulating the number of Hits. But we can do it for our website, for one of our company's user portal; we had added a small patch for increasing the hit count on weekly basis and its working fine too. It's a type of mimics; otherwise the other visitors may feel that nobody is turning to this site. But this will not help for any real statical analysis.

Re: Faking It
Toby and John - are you saying that a count is taken and before the next count is taken, the count is updated by any number the IT folks want to use?
